Deep Fried Discipline
what your food disgusts say about you and Georgia needs to give up the ghost
Matt’s BACK BABY and it’s been a minute. It’s time to chew some food news:
Has anyone ever called you a picky eater? Do certain things give you the food ‘ick’? How do you feel about bugs? Well IDR Labs has created a Food Disgust Test where you can answer a series of questions to determine what bothers you the most about the food you eat. So if you’re one of those people who loves online quizzes, step right up. They even have explainers below your results to dive deeper into the triggers you have and why. Now I might normally roll my eyes at any kind of ‘food test’, but I think this is actually helpful. All of us, myself included, should regularly examine our relationships with food as we change, so do our preferences. Tools like this can help us have a healthier relationship with the food we put into our bodies. At the very least I think this helps dispel any “picky eater” stereotypes. I took the test and yup, pretty goddamn accurate.
With summer just around the corner, stone fruits are coming into season. But this year, growers warn consumers they may be paying more for peaches at the store. Georgia produces roughly 30 million pounds of peaches annually but local growers expect this season’s crop to be about half that size. Dario Chavez, peach expert (nice) at University of Georgia, explains that the warmer winter woke the peach trees up earlyr from their dormant stage and then the orchards were hit with two unexpected freezes during blooming. Growers say all of that is predicted to reduce peach orchard yields by 50%-60%. Big oof. And while Georgia has successfully branded itself “The Peach State”both South Carolina and California produce more peaches than Georgia.
A moose walks into a movie- not a joke setup- literally a moose in Alaska stuck its head inside a movie theater door to sniff the sweet scent of freshly popped popcorn before sauntering into the lobby and helping itself to the trash. The staff, understandably confused and concerned for the animal, did what any of us would do in that situation- film it and post it on Tik Tok. The moose eventually left without any issue but not without taking a Happy Meal stuck in its snout. Which begs an even bigger question, how the fuck did a Happy Meal make it inside a movie theater?!
Speaking of McDonald’s, they announced people are buying fewer french fries and other add-ons with their orders in a recent earnings call. Executives point to customers being more conservative with their dollars as fears of a looming recession get stronger. This news isn’t a terrible thing for anyone. McD’s is still showing record profits and their competitively priced menu items ensures they’re all but recession-proof despite the changing demographics of their consumer base. PLUS a new study reveals a direct link in consumption of fried food, like fries, and an increase in depression (+7%) and anxiety (+12%). So maybe we could all exercise some deep fried discipline.

Until next week, keep those knives sharp y’all.
Welp, taking that quiz was super helpful: my food disgust is “extremely elevated” (83.75%). It dawned on me why I gravitate toward processed foods!! I’m going to have to think this through. I’m excited for the easier recipes like today’s peanut ginger noodles. No ick factor there! 😋
I still quote your podcast episode to my picky family members! Something about how picky adults are basically children who never evolve their tastebuds. 😏
