Thanks for the background. I watched it also and while not a vegan, definitely felt it was trying too hard to convince me to be one. Eating less meat, seafood and dairy is always good.
I completely agree with your assessment. I really wish they had more focus on the twins and what was happening with them over the course of the study. I also wish the study had been longer. I'm curious Michelle as to whether or not you've tried the Miyokos Mozzarella for pizza. The doc definitely made me intrigued about their cheeses and my wife and I are going to give them a try. Oh...I just read below and you answered my question.
Don't forget that the explosion in the amount of pizza we eat is based on the public/private propaganda campaign that brought us "Got Milk?" Dairy is highly subsidized, and as people started drinking less liquid milk, the Milk Processing Board and the federal government incentivized cheese consumption. Stuffed crust at the major pizza dealers was basically a brain storm idea to peddle more cheese. That "add extra cheese button" that pops up when you order online? People are not just making personal decisions to consume excess meat and dairy. There's a whole propaganda and subsidy machine in place that needs to be addressed if we want to enable more people to change their diets.
Do you have an issue with the Myoko brand liquid mozz cheese addressed in the doc. Your piece mentions that you’re waiting for a good vegan mozz. I tried it last nice and it was great. Wha the am I missing? Thanks.
I think it's the best one out there by far but I think there's still lots of room for improvement. It reminds of me of pizza party style pizza if that makes sense. I love it but I also want a product with more stretch and body
I find it interesting the guy who funded it is also vegan…so no bias at all, right? Hah! And don’t get me wrong, I whole heartily believe in a plant based diet, but wonder if some of what is in these documentaries are also in the verge of propaganda. There has to be land for vegetables to grow, and the land does become void of nutrients after so long, so they have to rotate and plant on new land. Obviously not as much land is needed as for cows, but it’s never mentioned.
I often wonder what the environmental effects of vegetable farming has, examples of drought brought on from watering avocado farms and shipping the produce across the world.
Raising chickens and having a garden in your backyard is ideal, but not realistic for a majority of the population (myself included). So for now, buying local and in season is the best I can do.
Yeah I think the docs don’t mention that because cows have to eat food that is grown as well so they’re in the red twice on land use: first to grow the food they’re being fed on these barren feed lots and the land of the feed lot themselves. Farming has plenty of issues but industrialized animal agriculture has those same issues compounded. The massive industrialization is always the root problem though, right?
I saw another reviewer mention that vegans can’t make unbiased docs which I find odd. Omnivores aren’t more even handed. This doc definitely had an agenda but that’s just a bad doc, not an intrinsic value of vegan film makers.
Agree, in part. I contend “when” is a critical complement to “what” you eat. Third would be a good variety of foods that are rich in trace minerals and vitamins (naturals)
Can't wait to watch it—thanks for the review. I want my kids to watch it with me, too. And, btw, I binged Deadloch too. I loved it and its zaniness at times.
It was so weird! First, the stories felt oddly chosen. They didn’t make sense together at all. There didn’t seem to be a point. The only one that felt important enough to be in the doc was a guy who planted a ton of trees but he didn’t get that much screen time. Then there’s a random, violent, insane robbery that’s shown but so poorly explained that I was left googling to try to figure it out. It felt like a bad student film that weirdly didn’t have enough trees in it
Hey y'all - that's Dr. GREGER, please!! (Says I, who has loved him since the days when his vids opened with the parting of cheesy orange curtains.)
I came to say the same thing!

Couldn’t have said it better myself 👏👏👏

Controversial comment:

Variety is so so important!

the last 3 episodes were so so good. i want to rewatch just those!
Right??
Thanks, Michelle. We watched it and was wondering what everyone thought.
What is baffling about the tree documentary? 👀 I haven’t watched it and I’m curious
