I live in a dry cabin in the woods of Alaska. My stove uses propane. Our electricity is not that reliable. Without propane we could freeze. I grew up in NYC. Those old apartments all had gas stoves plus my dad smoked three packs of Lucky Strikes IN THE HOUSE! None of us kids got asthma. I just turned 70.
1. Can't wait for my cabin in the woods era- when did you start? Originally from Alaska or moved there? Any tips? I've got maybe another year or two of bullshit before fully snapping into my return-to-the-wilderness stage.
2. Data suggests it impacts less than 20% of children, negated almost entirely with vent hoods and more prevalent in certain communities. My grandfather was a cowboy and smoked more than a pack of unfiltered cigs every single day. None of us, including him, ever got lung cancer. MF died of old age lol. And there's people who live their whole lives without a single puff and get diagnosed with lung cancer. Part of it is luck and environment but data points are certainly worth examining.
3. Dry cabin, is there such thing as a wet cabin? Or is this a septic term? And yeah almost everyone in Houston/hurricane zones have some kind of backup for when the power inevitably goes down. We kept 40 gallons of 87 octane stacked on 2x4s on the side of our house. We ran our generator to our fridge and neighbors on either side of us run extension cords to run their fridges. Everyone had gas ranges and could cook.
Dry cabin means no running water. We get our water from a spring in buckets. I am originally from the south bronx, spent 20 years in Minnesota, where my mom's family is originally from. Moved to Juneau, AK in 2009 for work after my husband died and I lost my job and my home. Moved to the woods in Willow at 69 years of age, Feels like I'm finally home.
Good post about a complex situation. I'm not sure why there are people here responding that you're being too political or voicing support for eliminating gas stoves. I suggest those people actually read your article again. I love cooking with gas, but if it helps save the planet, I'm down for changing to electric. Seriously, people. Oh, and the commenter who said you shouldn't be political—have they even read your stuff? Ever? So, yeah, those of you saying it's political and you're done with it, please, yes. Be done with it. Michelle and Matt, keep on rockin'.
Love this. We have a gas stove from the 40’s and are looking to go electric. Since all the chefs I know prefer gas stoves, I’ve had a hard time considering the switch. I mean, I LOVE my O’Keefe & Merritt. So your post is timely and will help to ease me into the more environmentally friendly option. ❤️
In the past we've also been vocal about our support for gas stoves. Maybe it's the devil we know? There is absolutely a superiority complex in cooking that if you use electric, it's seen as inferior. Prob leftover from the previous generations of the technology and maybe we were drinking the Kool-Aid too.
Induction technology is also fascinating. It's no perfect but damn if it isn't exciting. Recently saw a video of a stone kitchen top but there's a hidden range under the stone and after it boils a pot a water, a man removes the pot and put his hand over the exact spot with no burning or heat. WHAT?! Our ancestors would call us witches.
I’m just happy to have a working stove in my home ❤️ and a microwave, instant pot, air fryer.. power goes out and I have a gas grill, skottle.. hell I have a 110 outlet in my damn car. I’m feeling that moron elitist hard..
As I scientist, I am so interested into digging more into the data. As a human, I will chain myself to my gas stove before they take it away.
Also, fun fact, a roommate in college started a fire with our electric stove, so now I’m actually more afraid of those because I don’t trust them! Sneaky fires.
I am done with you guys. Why would you feel the need to politicize your once thriving business. Thug kitchen rocked. Do your fucking homework before you preach! Natural gas/electric?? See what’s sustainable.
Bad Manners, your post broke my heart today. I love you guys but you missed the mark. A one size fits all solution is going to fail everyone. As someone smarter than me said, we are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same ocean but some of us are in yatchs and some in rowboats. Don’t shit on gas stoves when you have a viable alternative. It doesn’t make good sense for all of us and for some, the gas stove is the best choice.
I do not believe that anybody cares about the kids with asthma. Except through mothers. Maybe that is the message should be. This is about trying to use a heavy hand to create people from using fossil fuels. But we do not have a reliable electrical grid. We do not have reliable electricity. Why should we endanger ourselves? I want electric and I want fossil fuel back up.
Holy SHIT I have a hundred questions the first being what is your blog/IG? You're living in 2042 and I need to know the details. Some of my family have solar panels too and same thing, they end up with excess energy every month that they actually sell back it back to their local municipality. Wild. The future seems rad.
Feed, not fed
Hastening, not hassening
but we knew that, those of us who mentally autocorrect typos 😉
typos should be the new "prove you're not a robot" test on websites, thanks for the catch!
ooh, the new i-am-not-a-robot test, i like it, i LIKE it!

Hell yeah Anita. I'm filled w questions:

Tough crowd. Love you guys and your insights. Oh yeh, the food too.
Think you should physically correct!
Agreed but it's alot to ask homeowners to switch, same issue solar companies have been having. Incentives! Tax breaks!
